Dr. Sonal Mehta Appointed as New Clinical Director of Palliative Services
Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine co-chiefs Dr. Ronald Adelman and Dr. Mark Lachs are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sonal Mehta as the new Clinical Director of Palliative Services.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Adelman, the founding Director of Adult Palliative Care at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Mehta gained a deep experience and knowledge in providing compassionate, patient-centered care of the highest quality to palliative care patients. As the new Clinical Director of Palliative Services, Dr. Mehta will oversee the inpatient palliative care units, outpatient clinics, and home-based palliative care services both at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center and Lower Manhattan Hospital. Dr. Mehta will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplains, to bring comprehensive and compassionate care to patients with serious illnesses and support their families.
Dr. Mehta joined the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine in 2008, providing palliative care consultation in the hospital and primary care at the Wright Center on Aging. In 2010, she received a Geriatrics Academic Career Award to develop geriatrics and palliative care education for interdisciplinary teams in home hospice settings, outpatient clinics, and in the hospital. She was honored with a Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award in 2019. She helped create the NYP Bi-Campus Palliative Care Fellowship and serves as Program Director of the Integrated Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine Fellowship and Associate Director of the Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Mehta has also published numerous articles and book chapters on various topics related to palliative care and end-of-life care.
